Putting out the scream for local ice cream

At the four-day Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance  held every spring and fall in Silk Hope, NC, we try to model sustainability. Yes, that means we want the festival to survive and flourish.  We also want to reduce our carbon footprint, and to model and teach the moral imperative of caring for our planet while strengthening the community created during the event, as well as the larger one in which we live, work, and dance.

Which brings me to ice cream. We have been using a Raleigh-owned business, but their ice cream came from the massive big-box store with the best price. Where was it made? We didn’t know.  Ingredients? Farming practices?  Not sure.  But where else can  they easily buy over 100 gallons of ice cream in one weekend?

We’re about to find out. For the April 22-25 festival we’re looking closer to home. We want to offer ice cream from a local creamery, and one that promises to be free of hormones and antibiotics.  Staffed by friendly festival volunteers, we will be new at running an ice cream booth, but we’ll have fun.  (And if that is too big an order, fine…we’ll use more than one source.)

    I am heartened by your comment that you’d look for dairy-free options. !!! So please, if you’re interested/willing to go that far, PLEASE consider LOW CARB, sugar free, and I will dance in delight!

    I generally must take ALL my food for Shakori Hills and rarely get to eat there. Coffee, and meats/veggies from the vendor that has (am I remembering this correctly?) alligator meat among their offerings, and one year, boiled eggs at the coffee shack, were/are my only on-site options otherwise. Even most of the veggie options were already marinated in some sugar&savory flavorings. Low-carb* ice cream (not just sugar free, though they often go hand in hand) would leave me ecstatic!

    Note: I’d put up a BIG sign that says “Sugar-free and low-carb selections are available!!!”, and not just low carb.

    Reason #1: many people think low carb was just a passing fad. Not so. But many are drawn to sugar free because they know they need to reduce sugar intake, or they’re diabetic, etc. (maybe offer a sample to the really curious inquirers who are skeptical that sugar free might result in a taste compromise.)

    Reason #2: many people at Shakori return each season, year after year. Sometimes we may not venture where we’ve not been able to eat in the past. I, for one, would NEVER go looking at each food vendor again, festival after festival, as I did the first 5 or so times**, because it takes forever to hunt for food, only to find there’s nothing you personally can eat. But with a big SIGN, I’d at LEAST do a good visual SCAN to see if there’s something safe for me to eat.

    * Low carb. For me/most people, some of the REDUCED carb ice creams that have 11 whopping grams is toooo much. 5 or fewer per half cup would be ideal, though 7 or 8 grams of carbohydrate per half cup would be acceptable as a splurge.
    ** 1. Stop listening to someone’s music, first of all, to go hunt for food (takes time from music).
    2. Stand in line (more time).
    3. Ask someone all those annoying personal diet questions (even MORE time, and infinitely annoying for them, people behind who are waiting to order, etc. …even if it IS not prime meal time!)
    4. Ask about modifications they can make. (ugggh)
    5. Accept rejection.
    6. Go to next vendor.
    7. Repeat steps 1-6.
    8. Hope for next festival.
    9. Attend next festival.
    10. Repeat steps 1-9.
    11. Bring your own food.

    Thanks for considering this, and passing it along to a possible vendor as well ! …And perhaps to non-ice-cream food vendors as well.
    PS – for ice cream: Maple Grove Farms? (Chapel Hill address, I think)

      Thanks so much for your suggestion. At the Coffee Barn we offer gluten-free baked goods, and yes, the hard boiled eggs are there exactly for the reasons you stated. Many healthy eaters avoid breads, muffins, white flour, white sugar, etc. and even our granola may be too sweet. I will look for the ice cream option you request. I welcome you to come talk with me (I run the Coffee Barn) about ways we can provide more food choicesfor you at the festival!
